Background
The concept of counterfeit electronic components, materials and assemblies (hereafter referred to simply as “counterfeit components”) is not a new phenomenon. The Counterfeit Components Project will address currently urgent issues that have arisen from the increased prevalence of non-regulated component supply. A counterfeit part exposes products to premature and unpredictable failures. Depending on each product’s intended application, the impact of these failures could be severe. Participating companies can expect to reap benefits that include a reduction in liability from products that fail prematurely, freedom from brand reputation degradation, both of which are significant business risks. Improved quality, efficiency gains and reductions in cost and manpower will result from the identification and mitigation of the availability of counterfeit parts.
